In 2008 Denise was diagnosed with endometrial adenocarcinoma, the most common type of gynaecological cancer. After having a complete hysterectomy the odds were in her favour with a 95% cure rate.
However four months later Denise’s cancer returned as a rare and aggressive clear cell endometrial tumour with a poor prognosis.
Denise was completing her Masters of Health Psychology when she was diagnosed and she drew on her psychology training to use evidence based strategies to help her cope during her treatment and ultimate survival.
She has hosted talks up the east coast of NSW as well as around the Upper Hunter. She continues to hold community talks to support other women experiencing cancer as it can be a lonely and confronting time.
Denise is a 10- year cancer survivor this year, after beating the odds to survive, and she talks about the coping strategies she used, her recovery from the side effects of treatment (major surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) as well as how she keeps herself healthy.
For those women who come along to her talks and who haven't experienced a gynaecological cancer she talks about the risk factors and symptoms associated with the cancer so they know what to be aware of in the hope they will seek medical advice sooner, if they notice any unusual and persistent changes in their bodies.
